Tips Before You Go – Get Organised!
Documents & Translations:
- Ensure all your certificates, official statements, passport, and insurance policy are translated and certified.
- Keep digital copies (USB, email, cloud) as a backup.
Money & Cards:
- Get a digital bank card (e.g., Revolut, N26) for easy and secure transactions.
- Take some cash in the local currency of your destination country.
- Download an app to track your expenses.
Mobile & Internet:
- Research affordable SIM card options in your destination country for immediate connectivity.
- Don’t forget offline maps (Google Maps), translation apps, and public transport apps.
Health & Medication:
- Pack essential medications, noting their names in English, for any eventuality.
- If you need specific ongoing treatment, make sure you have a medical certificate (preferably translated).
Arriving in Your New City…
Accommodation:
- Look for accommodation close to your university or public transport links.
- Choose between student halls and flats, which you’ll easily find on your university’s noticeboard or on platforms like Uniplaces and Idealista.
Meal Times – What to Expect:
- In Italy, most restaurants close after lunch (around 2 p.m.) and reopen in the evening – with hours that are somewhat similar to those in the UK, though dinner is usually served a bit later.
- In Spain, meal times are very similar to Greece: lunch is typically around 2–3 p.m., and dinner is often as late as 10 p.m.
- Familiarise yourself with local customs so you don’t go hungry!
Getting Around:
- Get a student travel card for public transport – you’ll usually get significant discounts.
- Find out about night bus and train routes in advance – for a safe return after evenings out.
University Life:
- Register at the library as soon as you arrive – it’ll be incredibly useful.
- Look for student clubs, mentoring programmes, and Erasmus groups to meet new people.
- Books are often expensive – check for free editions, second-hand options, or lending services.
Small Tips, Big Difference:
- Pack only the essentials: You’ll find most of what you need there.
- Don’t leave revision until the last minute: Organisation is key to success.
- Don’t limit yourself to only Greek friends: Meet students from other countries for a richer experience.
- Enjoy the experience: Travel, festivals, new cuisines, different cultures – make the most of it all!
- If you feel overwhelmed, ask for help: Universities always offer student support services.
